Rob and Carrie Lowther in 1993.
More than 30 years ago, Carrie and Rob Lowther were both working in the telecommunications industry. After working with inferior products and witnessing poor service, they saw a void that needed to be filled: high-quality cabinets that could be delivered on time. So, they founded a company called Great Lakes Case & Cabinet – a company that today is more like a family. We sat down with Carrie and Rob to get to know them and get a glimpse into the past, present, and future of their world as co-founders of GLCC. Take a look:
Tell us about your background. What were you doing before GLCC?
We both started at GTE/Verizon and that is where we met. Carrie spent 9 ½ years at GTE/Verizon. Rob worked for four telecommunications companies from 1978-1991.
What unique challenges have you faced as co-founders?
The biggest challenge was trying to find a bank willing to provide a line of credit and finance facility construction.
What are you most proud of from the GLCC legacy you’ve built thus far?
Our commitment to our customers and our co-workers.
What are the guiding principles on which GLCC was founded? Are they the same today?
Our founding principles are and have always been honesty and integrity and outstanding service to the customer.
What do you wish someone had told you when you were first starting this business?
The amount of hard work and commitment it really takes to run a successful business.
What’s a mistake you had to learn from along the way?
Making sure you have the right people but most importantly that they are in the right positions and that they have the same commitment to the customer that we have.
What’s the single most important ingredient when it comes to a successful business relationship, whether it be with a customer, employee, vendor, etc.?
What advice would you give to up-and-coming leaders at GLCC?
Don’t waiver from your core beliefs.
Leading from the front and standing by their core beliefs – that’s what makes Carrie and Rob strong leaders and why GLCC continues to be the successful company (and family) we are today.
